They solved the problem by using this +9.5dBi high performance Omni antenna sitting on a magnetic base with 6ft RP-SMA pigtail.

Indeed it really makes a pretty big difference between an antenna installed at a PC under a desk and the same antenna that could reach out for "fresh air". Easy to replace the factory standard low-gain 2dBi Rubber Duck antennae of your wireless router, access point, PCI adapter, etc. Instantly delivering a gain of x9.8 to improve the speed and the range of your wireless connection.

It is slim, lightweight and having a length of merely 15 inches. It works beautifully with any 802.11b/g WiFi devices connected to the +12dBi  TurboTenna 007GT PRO waveguide antenna that complements with this +9.5dBi Omni antenna and extend the range even further. The TurboTenna 007GT PRO is a directional antenna with a beam aperture of 30 degrees ideally for range extension and blind-spot elimination.

The +9.5dBi Omni offers two types of RF connectors: RP-SMA (this auction item) and RP-TNC. If you need to connect it to something else, you could use the Antenna Desktop Adapter Box  that holds the +9.5dBi Omni with adjustable tile angles and converting the RF connector to MC Card, MMCX, MCX-Male, etc. The diagram on the left shows the connection of the +9.5dBi Omni to the PCMCIA wireless adapter (MC Card) of a laptop using the Antenna Desktop Adapter Box.

The Antenna Desktop Adapter Box provides two RF connectors - one for the antenna and the other for the pigtail that offers a matching RF connector required by various brand and model of WiFi devices.

The magnetic base has a RP-SMA female connector on top that could fit in an antenna or a RF amplifier pen booster with a RP-SMA connector. It also comes with a 6ft RF pigtail with a RF connector of choice - examples are N-male, RP-SMA, RP-TNC, MC Card, MMCX, RP-MMCX or MCX. Some buyers purchased the magnetic base with the RP-SMA pigtail together with a 6" inches adapter pigtail. The pigtail prevents the tiny RF connector from being damaged by frequent inserting into and disconnecting from the WiFi pcmcia card (see picture on the right).
